Jean-Marc Quarin is an independent critic specializing in Bordeaux wines. A graduate of the Bordeaux Oenology Institute, he has acquired a unique knowledge of the Bordeaux vineyards, with the ability to spot the finest successes and future great wines. Recognized by the international press for the relevance of his judgments, he also cultivates the art of making wine discover, love and understand like no other. In 2011, he published his tasting method based on knowledge of Bordeaux wines: “La bouche avant le nez”. In 2015, the journal of Wine Economics defined it as follows: “Jean-Marc Quarin and Robert Parker are the most influential experts, with a 10% increase in their scores leadind to about 7% higher prices. Jean-Marc Quarin, though less known, has in-depth knowledge of the Bordeaux market, a region in which he lives, and is widely regarded as one of the most authoritarive expert on Bordeaux wines in France. ” In 2020, its online commentary library includes more than 42,000 notes on Bordeaux wines.
Philippe Masset is currently Associate Professor of Finance at the Ecole Hôtelière de Lausanne (EHL). He is a member of several academic associations and is notably a founding member of the Alliance for Research on Wine & Hospitality Management (which brings together five leading universities in these fields) as well as a member of the board of the European Association of Wine Economists (EuAWE). He has published numerous articles in academic journals (Economic Inquiry, Economic Modeling, European Financial Management, Journal of Wine Economics, Journal of Alternative Investments, etc.) and has also contributed to collective book chapters. He received the award for best presentation at conferences from EuAWE (University of Angers, 2011) and the American Association of Wine Economics (Princeton University, 2012) as well as the award for best teacher at EHL in 2020. His research interests focus on the economics of wine, alternative investments, the economics of the hospitality sector, and “gamification” methods in education.
Gildas L’Hostis, Senior Teacher, teaches courses dedicated to wines (viticulture, oenology, market, tasting) at the Ecole hôtelière de Lausanne as well as a course on wine and art to master’s students (Master in Wine and Hospitality management).
Coming from the hotel industry, Gildas has acquired experience through the management of catering units, F&B outlets as well as as a sommelier. He continued his education in Australia for two years and then worked in the wine business. A teacher for more than twenty years, he has specialized in subjects relating to management in F&B, and more particularly in wine. Gildas has taught in Switzerland, Polynesia and France. Through his courses, he shares his deep interest in the field of consumption and international wine trade. In addition, he is particularly interested in the impact of cultural contexts on tasting, the teaching of wine in the world and the relationships between wine and art.
Jean-Philippe Weisskopf is associate professor of finance at the Ecole hôtelière de Lausanne (EHL), lecturer at the University of Friborg and a founding member of the Alliance for Research on Wine & Hospitality Management. His research focuses on empirical finance, in particular family businesses and dividend policies, as well as the economics of wine. Jean-Philippe Weisskopf has published in prestigious academic journals in finance and economics, notably in the Review of Financial Studies, the Journal of Banking & Finance, the Journal of Corporate Finance, the Journal of Alternative Investments and Economic Inquiry. His research has been reported in mass-circulation media such as Reuters, Bloomberg, The Times, The Globe and Mail, The South China Morning Post, The Financial Times, Huffington Post, Les Echos, La Tribune, Le Temps, NZZ or La Repubblica. He received the EHL best researcher award in 2016.
Fabrice Léger, specialist in customer relations and consumer aspirations. A graduate of the DESS Techniques Statistics et Informatique at the University of Paris 2 Panthéon-Assas, he began his professional career at WEFA (Wharton Econometric Forecasting Associates), a forecasting and consulting company in economics. In 2001, he created a marketing research firm specializing in customer relations. Passionate about wines, he decided in 2013, after meeting Jean-Marc Quarin, to bring his marketing knowledge closer to his passion. He is one of those newcomers to the world of wine with the conviction of the contribution of “crossbreeding”, the best of both worlds. He has wine at his “heart” and wishes to renew the highlighting of wines that are unknown to the general public but whose taste enchants. He created with Jean-Marc Quarin in Paris in November 2013, the first edition of the Outsiders fair of the Quarin guide and in May 2016 Les Rencontres Jean-Marc Quarin in Lausanne, Switzerland.
